The Meritage Collection

We like to think our Meritage Resort and Spa property lies right at the heart of Northern California wine country. The iconic Napa Grape Crusher statue, that rests atop the knoll above our resort, is not only symbolic of the unyielding dedication and passion of our founding Napa Valley vintners, but of all the committed growers and producers that make up this world class region today. With all of Northern California wine country at our doorstep, it is only fitting that we place a bottle of Napa Valley’s Trinitas Cellars in every single room for guests to enjoy (only for those 21 or older, of course) across The Meritage Collection. We simply cannot get enough, or share enough, of the magic of Napa. So last month we invited our guests to participate in a workshop with world renown glassmaker Riedel to get the scoop on how exceptional wine glasses help you savor even more of what great Napa wines have to offer. We all had so much fun, that we’re doing it again. For those of you who participated in the last tasting, do not worry, Trinitas Cellars is featuring two new wines. If you already have the kit, all you will need are wines.

Join us and Riedel for a wine glass webinar on Wednesday June 24th, from 5:30PM to 6:30PM PST, in partnership with Trinitas Cellars. This tasting will feature Trinitas Cellar’s 2017 Sauvignon Blanc and 2017 O’Neill Vineyard Pinot Noir. During the interactive webinar, you will get to learn about Grape Varietal wine glasses from Riedel representative Susan Durbrow and about Trinitas Cellars wines from Garrett Busch. Here is some of the information that we picked up from the last tasting!

SHAPE MATTERS!

Most people do not realize that the glass is an instrument to convey the wine's message. Riedel discovered in the 1950s that the shape of a glass influences the bouquet and taste of wine. The key factor in determining the relationship between fruit, acidity, tannin and alcohol is the grape variety. Riedel, with the help and support of the world's greatest palates, was able to create shapes in which the wine, vinified from specific grape varieties, seemed to improve. As Georg Riedel says, “No one blames the glassmaker, they blame the winemaker.”

“MESSAGE” OF WINE

There are 4 components which come together to translate the “message” of the wine: Bouquet, Texture, Flavor and Finish.

  • BOUQUET: Grape varietal specific stemware is responsible for delivering the quality and intensity of the wine's aroma.
  • TEXTURE: Grape varietal specific stemware highlights the exciting and diverse styles of "mouthfeel" in wine (watery, creamy, silky, velvety).
  • FLAVOR: Grape varietal specific stemware creates a balanced interaction between the fruit, minerality, acidity and bitter components of a wine.
  • FINISH: Grape varietal specific stemware offers a pleasant, seamless, harmonious, and long-lasting aftertaste.

As the Riedel Family well knows, we can talk until we are blue in the face and you still may not believe these glasses can make a difference. The only way to know is to try them for yourself. Come on and join us. We just might change your wine life….
